If you’re traveling from other parts of Asia, Australia, or Africa, you’ll also find a good number of direct flights to Bangkok.

Step 2: Domestic Flight to Ranong

Once in Bangkok, your next destination is the city of Ranong, located on Thailand’s west coast. It’s the closest mainland city to Koh Phayam and your gateway to the island. Several domestic airlines, like Air Asia and Nok Air, operate flights from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport (DMK) to Ranong Airport (UNN). The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Step 3: Transfer to Ranong Pier

Upon landing in Ranong, the next step is to get to the Ranong Pier, also known as the Saphan Pla Pier. This is where you’ll catch a boat to Koh Phayam. You can reach the pier by taxi or local songthaew (a shared taxi-like vehicle). The journey from Ranong Airport to the pier should take around 20-30 minutes.

Step 4: Boat to Koh Phayam

Finally, from Ranong Pier, you’ll take a boat to Koh Phayam. There are two types of boats you can take: a speedboat or a slow boat.

• Speedboat: The speedboat is the faster option, taking approximately 45 minutes to reach Koh Phayam. The speedboats usually run multiple times a day.
• Slow Boat: The slow boat is a more leisurely and less expensive choice. It takes about 2-3 hours to reach the island but can be a more scenic and relaxing journey.

Ensure to check the boat schedules as they may vary depending on the season. The last boats usually leave in the afternoon, so plan your flight to Ranong accordingly.

Step 5: Arrival at Koh Phayam

Upon arrival, you can hire a motorcycle taxi to your accommodation. The island is relatively small, so it shouldn’t take long to reach your destination. The island does not have cars, so the main modes of transportation are motorcycles, bicycles, or on foot.

From both Krabi and Phuket, you would typically have to travel to Trang or to Pak Bara Pier in Satun province to take a boat to Koh Lipe. The travel duration to get to Koh Lipe from either Krabi or Phuket can take a similar amount of time when considering all the modes of transportation.

• Transfer to Pak Bara Pier: Once at the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a minibus to Pak Bara Pier. This can take around 2 hours from Hat Yai and 1.5 hours from Trang.
• Ferry from Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe: The ferry or speedboat from Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe generally takes around 1.5 – 2 hours. During the high season, there are several trips per day. But in the low season, there might be just one or two, so it’s best to check the ferry schedule in advance.

2. Train + Minibus + Ferry:

• Train from Bangkok to Hat Yai or Trang: Take an overnight train from Bangkok to Hat Yai or Trang. The journey can take 12-15 hours.
• Minibus to Pak Bara Pier: From the train station, take a minibus to Pak Bara Pier.
• Ferry from Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe: Take a ferry or speedboat from Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe.

3. Bus + Ferry:

Koh Lipe, often referred to as a real-life paradise, is a small tropical island located in Thailand’s deep south, not far from Langkawi, Malaysia. Lipe Secret Beach, located 87.9 km away from the city center of Satun, is ranked 31st out of 45 beaches in the Satun Province region. Nestled among mountains and surrounded by cliffs, the beach is a natural beauty.

As its name suggests, Secret Beach is not a well-known spot, making it the perfect destination for those seeking serene leisure. It is a tiny bay with crystal turquoise water with a nice sandy entrance for swimming at high tide. Even during high season, the beach remains almost deserted, making it a great choice for lone travelers, relaxation getaway lovers, and hikers.

The beach is entirely free and void of amenities, offering only the natural beauty of the surrounding environment. It is important to note that the shore experiences a significant low tide, affecting the available activities, such as swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling.

Reaching the Secret Beach can be an adventure in itself. Most people that get to Secret Beach will take a kayak from Pattaya Beach. The trip from Pattaya beach is about 1.4km.

Most people don’t realize that there is also a route to Secret Beach that is entirely overland. So if you would rather stay off the water, you can still get to Secret Beach with a little more effort.

You will need to take the inner island road that runs past sunset beach. You will need to continue on this road past the forever restaurant and past the last turn off to Sanom Beach Resort. The rd will turn into a dirt path and eventually you will come to a fork. One direction will lead straight into the jungle and the other will lead downhill through the jungle to the left. This route downhill towards the water is where you need to go.

There will be 3 small beaches you discover along this route. The first is Pantai Gala Beach. When you get to Pantai Gala Beach, you will turn right and take a trail at the end of the beach to the next beach, known as Svedo Beach.

From Svedo beach you will continue on a somewhat difficult and moderately dangerous trail around the rocks and through the trees. Finally, you will reach Secret Beach.

What Else to Explore

The allure of Koh Lipe does not end at Secret Beach. The island is renowned for its stunning beaches, snorkeling opportunities, and relaxed atmosphere. There are three main beaches and a few smaller, less-visited ones, each offering plenty of space and scenic views. Kayaking is particularly popular at Sunrise Beach, where you can paddle to a tiny island named Ko Kra.

For more adventure, consider a day trip to Koh Lipe’s much larger neighboring island, Koh Adang. Accessible by longtail boat transfer from Sunrise Beach, Koh Adang is mostly uninhabited, making it a perfect spot to visit the viewpoint, beach, and small waterfall.

When the sun sets, the road from Pattaya Beach to Sunrise Beach transforms into a pedestrian-only street called Walking Street. Along this 600-meter long stretch, you’ll find countless restaurants, good handicraft shops, and market-like eateries serving local Thai cuisine.

Despite its tranquil nature, Koh Lipe does have a selection of beach bars where you can unwind with a drink while enjoying the stunning sunsets. While the drinks might be slightly pricier compared to other hotspots like Koh Tao or Bangkok, the scenic views more than make up for it.

Getting There

Given its southernmost location in Thailand, reaching Koh Lipe is a bit more challenging than getting to other islands in the region. However, despite the absence of an airport due to the island’s small size, there are several ferry routes available to get you there.

Pros: The beach’s seclusion doesn’t detract from its appeal. It’s an excellent spot for snorkeling or kayaking, and you can find some decent spots for sunbathing or beachcombing.

Cons: One potential downside is that Billa Beach is rocky, which could be a reason it’s not as crowded as other beaches.

Sanom Beach

The picturesque Sanom Beach is a hidden gem offering varying shades of turquoise waters so clear you can see the underwater rocks.
